#SAGETV ALTERNATIVES UPDATE#
UPDATE – most of the list is now complete, a few more items need to be filled in and I need to add a sticky to the main blog home page. Hopefully the one or two other people who visit my blog aside from myself will find this useful!!! Keep in mind that I am a Windows user, so all my links below relate to that come version of that O/S (Xp/Vista/W7). I will try to keep this list updated, as well as make it a sticky on my blog for easy reference. Too many times I find myself digging around trying to find the link to an app, especially when doing a clean reinstall of an O/S.
#SAGETV ALTERNATIVES SOFTWARE#
I have been wanting to do a post for a while that shows a list of all the various software apps I am using or have tried. So what do you think, is moving from a free to a paid platform a smart move or will users just gravitate to the next free product? If you are a user or Media Browser or metabrowser are you already looking at alternatives? If a user has a certain expectation of service with a free product, just imagine what they may expect if they become a paid customer. The big challenge when moving from free to a paid model is managing customer expectations. Many of us “ internet dwellers” have gotten spoiled by the surplus of free/open sourced applications out there that we forget that many of the people who develop these apps do so as a hobby and actually have a day job. This is where things get interesting, free vs. With Media Browser going to a paid model more users will probably look towards free alternatives to coexist with Media Browser which could further diminish the user base of meta browser. Second, there are still plenty of free alternatives for gathering metadata for Media Browser ( YAMMM, Media Center Master, Salami, etc…). Since Media Browser already has a built in scraper, you could argue that metabrowser would now be competing with Media Browser for customer $$$ which is probably not the best thing. First, supposedly this month Media Browser will be going to a paid subscription. On the other hand I feel this may be bad timing for two reasons. On one hand I have no problem with anyone trying to make some money for all the effort that goes into their projects. Anyone who has already donated to metabrowser will be exempt from this fee. The developer “ <” stated that with the next release (expected in the coming months) Metabrowser will be available for a fee in the range of $20. I have been using PLEX with the SageTV plugin as a client with Chromecast pretty successfully, but that's missing Guide etc.MetaBrowser, a popular metadata tool used alongside Media Browser, looks like it will be following in the footsteps of Media Browser and move to a fee based model. If you purchase an Intel NUC, or cheap $200 Dell Laptop, you just set it behind the TV and forget about it. It wont even need to talk to the internet at all.
#SAGETV ALTERNATIVES PC#
is overrated when the PC is not going to do anything behind your firewall/router. A one time OS install, with drivers, and the patches for the OS at that time, is going to take at most a day worth of effort. Honestly, when you set up a PC client, I have not seen the burden of constant patching etc. I have played around with the idea of going to PC's like Skirge01 suggested, for when my HD300s die. So if anyone else has any better thoughts, please let me know. The HD300 work perfect but I have no spares and another just died. I've had them before and I found them to be a PITA. But I do not want to build 4 pc's just for viewing on my other tv's.
